Getting Started

Ella is an AI-powered platform that helps you create personalized visual supports for neurodivergent children. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or therapist, Ella makes it easy to create social stories, visual schedules, picture cards, and video clips in minutes.

Creating Your Account

To begin using Ella, sign in at ella.kids using any of the available methods. An account will automatically be created for you if one doesn't exist. Once you've signed in, you'll be ready to create your first character and start generating visual supports.

Understanding Characters

Characters are at the heart of Ella. Each character represents a person and appears in all the visual supports you create for them. You need at least one character to create supports, but you can create multiple characters for different people.

Predefined Characters

Ella offers 12 predefined characters that you can use immediately. These are ready-made characters that work well for getting started quickly or for situations where you don't need a highly personalized character.

Creating a Custom Character

To create a personalized character for a specific person:

  1. Enter a first name
  2. Input gender
  3. Enter age
  4. Optional: List their likes
  5. Choose language and visual simplification options
  6. Provide a detailed physical description
You can create animals and other characters by specifying a species instead of gender.

Why Add "Likes"?

Adding favorite things (like music, bicycles, or dogs) makes the supports more engaging, familiar, and relatable because these items will appear in the images.

Copyrighted materials (like specific brand characters) may not render as expected due to restrictions.

Character Description Tips

Describe your character’s appearance in as much detail as you can, focusing on the most distinctive, clearly observable features. Keep the description specific and objective.

Include:

  • Skin tone: “Pale with peach undertones” is better than “White.”
  • Hair color: “Chestnut” is better than “brown.”
  • Hair style: “Bob cut” is better than “short.”
  • Distinctive features: dimples, freckles, glasses, scars, moles, and similar details.
  • Clothing: simple clothing is more consistent than shirts with complex graphics.

Do not worry about making it perfect. Ella will refine your input. Avoid relative terms like “tall” or “small,” since they are not precisely defined and can lead to unexpected results.

Example: “Pale skin with warm undertones, green eyes, auburn hair in a short bob haircut, dimples, a blue T-shirt with black joggers, and white sneakers.”

Generating Your Character

Once you've entered all details:

  1. Click Create Image
  2. Wait less than a minute for generation
  3. If something isn't quite right, update the description and regenerate
  4. Repeat as many times as needed until satisfied
  5. Click Done when ready
The characters are shown as photographs to make it easier to assess their features. You will choose a visual style (like clay or stylized) when creating your visual supports later. These characters are for reference only, and their appearance may vary slightly depending on the visual style you use. If you update a character's description and regenerate, the updated version will apply to new creations going forward — existing creations will not be automatically changed.
